AAOA Welcomes the American Pharmacists Association as New National Partner

ARLINGTON, Va., March 5, 2019 — Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA), a national coalition convening stakeholders from across the healthcare community to combat the prescription opioid abuse epidemic, announced today the addition of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) as its new partner. APhA joins 16 national partners and more than 50 state and local organizations that are engaging patients, caregivers, pharmacists, providers and the public to increase awareness around the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids.

“Pharmacists are on the front lines with patients in addressing the opioid crisis. We serve important roles in patient care and in responsible stewardship of opioids for those patients who are prescribed these medicines,” said Thomas E. Menighan, BSPharm, MBA, ScD (Hon), FAPhA, CEO for APhA. “Through our partnership with AAOA, we will promote collaborative care with prescribers and patients to achieve appropriate pain management and reduce the risk of potential misuse when prescription opioids are necessary.”

AAOA has taken an active role to engage the pharmacy community in patient and provider education efforts around prescription opioid safety by developing a pharmacy toolkit. The AAOA Pharmacy Toolkit is equipped with resources to help pharmacists engage with and educate patients about the safe use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

“Pharmacists play a crucial role in helping patients and caregivers understand the importance of safely using, storing and disposing of prescription opioids,” said John Parker, Senior Vice President of Communications for the Healthcare Distribution Alliance, the founding member of AAOA. “We welcome APhA as our new national partner and look forward to continued collaborations with the pharmacy community to increase awareness around the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with these pain medicines.”

With its commitment to educating communities across the country about preventing prescription opioid abuse and misuse, AAOA and its partners have developed a full suite of resources and materials around the safe and proper use, storage and disposal of opioid medications, including a patient engagement video to underscore that pain is a normal part of the healing process and an online disposal database to locate drop-off locations by ZIP code.
