AAOA Raises Awareness About Preventing Prescription Opioid Abuse and Misuse in the Workplace

CARLISLE, Pa., July 30, 2018 — Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA) joined human resource (HR) professionals and employers at the Pennsylvania State Council Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) 2018 Volunteer Leadership Conference on Saturday to discuss the critical role they play in preventing prescription opioid abuse and misuse in the workplace. AAOA addressed how the opioid epidemic is affecting the business community and provided best practices to help prevent further instances of prescription opioid abuse and misuse among employees.

“When employer leadership develops a strong drug-free workplace policy, it creates a foundation for a safe work environment,” said Samm Smeltzer, Event Chair for the Pennsylvania State Council SHRM. “HR professionals have an opportunity to educate employees on preventing abuse by helping them understand the importance of the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids.”

AAOA is a national coalition convening stakeholders in public health, healthcare and across the pharmaceutical supply chain to help engage and raise awareness to prevent the misuse and abuse of prescription opioids in communities nationwide. AAOA works with organizations like local SHRM chapters to foster communication at the local level to discuss solutions to address the prescription opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania and throughout the rest of the country.

During the event, AAOA helped facilitate a thoughtful discussion around the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioid use, including how to properly use, store and dispose of these medicines.

“As the opioid epidemic continues to take its toll on families and communities nationwide, it is important for the business and HR sectors to hold discussions like this to better understand their role in preventing improper use of these pain medicines,” said John Parker, Senior Vice President of Communications with the Healthcare Distribution Alliance, the founding member of AAOA. “We look forward to working with the Pennsylvania State Council SHRM and its members in the fight against prescription opioid abuse.”

AAOA, along with its national partners, have created educational resources to help raise awareness about the safe use, proper storage and disposal of prescription opioids, available at www.AgainstOpioidAbuse.org.
