AAOA Joins Public Health Leaders at Commonwealth Prevention Alliance’s Annual Conference

Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA) was in State College, Pennsylvania, on June 6 to attend the 28th Annual Prevention Conference. Hosted by the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance, the event brought together more than 300 Pennsylvania prevention and public health professionals to learn and share resources to help reduce substance abuse, including the misuse and overuse of prescription opioids, in the state.

The conference featured speakers from the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance, Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs, Evidence-based Prevention and Intervention Support Center (EPISCenter) and University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy to discuss the crucial role prevention plays in combatting the opioid epidemic. Attendees also learned about PA Stop, a statewide initiative working to stop prescription drug abuse before it occurs.

Since its launch earlier this year, AAOA has been building partnerships with national, state and local stakeholders, like the Commonwealth Prevention Alliance, to:

  • Drive awareness about prescription opioid misuse and abuse;
  • Provide educational resources for distribution to patients, healthcare providers, pharmacists and the general public;
  • Convene community events and meetings with national and local organizations to discuss new approaches to addressing the opioid crisis; and,
  • Promote take-back initiatives, disposal options and community education events across the country.
