CAMP HILL, Pa., September 28, 2018 — Business leaders from across central Pennsylvania gathered in Camp Hill on September 27 to discuss opportunities for collaboration in response to the prescription opioid abuse epidemic. The event, sponsored by Allied Against Opioid Abuse (AAOA) and the West Shore Chamber of Commerce, featured speakers that discussed how the crisis is affecting the region’s business community and the proactive solutions that can be taken to help mitigate abuse and misuse.
“Raising awareness about prescription opioid abuse is increasingly becoming top of mind for business owners, human resource professionals and managers throughout central Pennsylvania,” said George M. Book, Jr., President and CEO of the West Shore Chamber of Commerce. “While this is a difficult subject to address with employees, we are grateful to have resources to share and allies who are with us as we work to educate staff members about the rights, risks and responsibilities related to opioid use.”
AAOA is an educational initiative bringing together local, state and national stakeholders to raise awareness about methods for proper use, storage and disposal of prescription opioids. AAOA gathered speakers for a panel discussion to address how business owners and managers can empower their workforce to prevent prescription opioid misuse.
At the event, AAOA also focused on what steps employees can take to understand their rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids, which included a training on how to safely use, store and dispose of these medicines. AAOA has created a full suite of online materials to help patients, their family members and friends prevent prescription opioid abuse and misuse, available at www.AgainstOpioidAbuse.org/Act.
“AAOA is a committed partner working to make a meaningful difference in reversing this public health crisis in Pennsylvania and across the rest of the country,” said John Parker, Senior Vice President of Communications with the Healthcare Distribution Alliance, AAOA’s founding member. “Through our continued engagement with the Pennsylvania business community, we are making progress around preventing prescription opioid misuse and abuse and connecting local business leaders with community resources in their region.”
